The VirtualViipuri -project of Tampere University of Applied Sciences creates a 3D-model of the town of Viipuri as it was in September 1939. The project produces multimedia material to present the town, its sights and architecture. The site (click here) contains pictures, videos and text of the 1939 Viipuri and due the exhibition of European Acoustic Heritage in Tampere september 2012, also  the city soundscape was studied.

The information is based on the intendant Juha Lankinen’s writings of each block of the centre of Viipuri. He has created the scale model of Viipuri, which consists of over 3500 buildings and is currently located in the South-Karelia Museum in Lappeenranta. The scale model was shot to a video and the soundscapes were made by Teemu Wahlroos accordingly to the images.

The sonic material is gathered from different sound archives eg. the genuine church bells from YLE ( Finnish Broadcasting Company) archives. The historical sounds recordings of buses, steamships, trains and  machines have been received from enthuasist  all over Finland. Download video here (360 Mb in ISO format).
